Sharp claims to have been the world's largest producer of solar cells for every year since 2000. Residential solar panels are available to retrofit an existing home, or for new construction. Sharp solar panels are sold through a network of independent consultants who have completed a two-day certification course to sell and install Sharp's solar modules.

History

Sharp was founded in 1915, but did not begin developing its first solar cell until 1959. It began developing solar cells for the aerospace industry in 1967 and began its first solar systems explicitly for residential use in 1996. In 2000, Sharp received Japan's "New Energy" Award. The company introduced its first residential solar system for use in the United States in 2003. According to industry trade magazine PV News, in 2004, Sharp generated more than 27% of the solar cells generated in the world.

Photovoltaic Product Lines

Sharp manufactures all four components typically included in a residential solar system: the solar panels themselves, the SunVista. inverter, the system status monitor and the electric meter. Sharp designs their solar panels to have a service life of more than 20 years. The other components are designed for a service life of 10 years.

Warranty

Sharp provides the original owner of the solar panel ("photovoltaic module") for a period of one year from the date of purchase against manufacturer's defects and workmanship. They warrant the electrical output of that module for 25 years: at 90% of its rated output for the first 10 years and 80% of its rated output for the next 15. The warranty transfers to later owners, assuming that the panels remain installed at the original location.
